前置詞句…三年A


中学生が英語の文構造を理解する場合、いわゆる五文型の理解は構造が単一
であればそう苦労することはなく、ここに取り上げる前置詞句が副詞的に使
われているか形容詞的に使われているか適確に把握することが一番難しいよ
うである。前置詞句が適確に把握できれば、文構造の理解も適確になるのは
当然のことである。たえず「なんだもんで？」という疑問意識をもとう。

　　Then one day the boy came to the tree 　ある日、少年がやってきました。
　　and the tree said,“Come,boy,come and climb up　　「ここにおいで、
　　my trunk and swing from my branches 　　木に登ったり、枝をゆすったり、
　　and eat apples and play in my shade 　　林檎を食べたり、木陰で遊んで
　　and be happy.” 　　　　　　　　　　　　楽しみなさい」といいました。
　　“I am too big to climb and play,” 　　「大きくなったから
　　said the boy. 　　　　　　　　　　　　　登って遊べないよ」
　　“I want to buy things and have fun.　　「何か買って遊びたいんだ。
　　I want some money.　　　　　　　　　　　お金がほしい。くれる？」
　　Can you give me some money ?”　　　　　と、少年はいいました。

　　“I am sorry,”said the tree, 　　　　「わるいがね、お金はないんだよ」
　　“but I have no money.　　　　　　　　と、木はいいました。
　　I have only leaves and apples.　　　　「木の葉と林檎しかないんですよ、
　　Take my apples,Boy, 　　　　　　　　　林檎をとっていきない
　　and sell them in the city.　　　　　　それを町で売って
　　Then you will have money　　　　　　　お金を手にいれなさい。
　　and you will be happy.”　　　　　　　そうすれば、幸せになるよ」
　　And so the boy climbed up the tree　　そこで、少年は木によじ登り
　　and gathered her apples 　　　　　　　林檎をとって
　　and carried them away.　　　　　　　　それを持っていきました。
　　And the tree was happy. 　　　　　　　木は幸せでした。

　　But the boy stayed away 　　　　　　　木はそんなふうにしたのだが、

　　and the tree was sad. 　　　　　　　　来は悲しんでいました。
　　And then one day　　　　　　　　　　　しばらくして、ある日
　　the boy came back 　　　　　　　　　　少年が戻ってきました。
　　and the tree shook with joy 　　　　　木はふるえるほど喜びました。
　　and she said,“Come, boy, 　　　　　　木はいいました。「おいでよ、
　　climb up my trunk 　　　　　　　　　　私の木によじ登って
　　and swing from my branches　　　　　　枝をゆすって
　　and be happy.” 　　　　　　　　　　　遊びなさいよ」

　　“I am too busy to climb trees,” 　　「木に登る暇がないよ」
　　said the boy. 　　　　　　　　　　　　と少年はいいました。
　　“I want a house to keep me warm, ”　「僕は温かくしてくれる
　　he said.　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　家がほしいんだ」
　　“I want a wife and I want　　　　　　「お嫁さんがほしい、子供がほしい、
　　children,and so I need a house. 　　　だから家がほしいんだ。
　　Can you give me a house?”　　　　　　僕に家をくれれる？」
　　“I have no house,”said the tree.　　木はいいました。「私は家はないよ
　　“The forest is my house, 　　　　　　森が私の家なんだよ。
　　but you may cut off my branches 　　　でも、私の枝を切りとって
　　and build a house.　　　　　　　　　　家を建てることができますよ。
　　Then you will be happy.” 　　　　　　そうすれば、幸せになれますよ」

　　And so the boy cut off her branches 　　　それで少年は木の枝を切りとり
　　and carried them away to build his house. 家を建てようとして持去りました。
　　And the tree was happy. 　　　　　　　　　木は幸せでした。

　　But the boy stayed away 　　　　　　　木はそんなふうにしたのだが、
　　for a long time...　　　　　　　　　　少年は暫くはきませんでした。
　　And when he came back,　　　　　　　　それでも、彼が帰ってくると
　　the tree was so happy 　　　　　　　　木はたいそう喜び、
　　she could hardly speak. 　　　　　　　ほとんど話ができないほどでした。
　　“Come, Boy,”she whispered,　　　　　「おいでよ」と木は囁きました。
　　“come and play.”　　　　　　　　　　「来て、遊びなさい」
　　“I am too old and sad to play,” 　　「年老い悲しみも知り、遊べないよ」
　　said the boy. 　　　　　　　　　　　　と、その子はいいました。
　　“I want a boat that will take me 　　「僕は船がほしい、
　　far away from here. 　　　　　　　　　遠くへ連れてってくれる船をね。
　　Can you give me a boat ?”　　　　　　船を僕にくれるかい？」
　　“Cut my trunk　　　　　　　　　　　　「私の幹を切りなさい、
　　and make a boat,”　　　　　　　　　　そして船を作りなさい」
　　said the tree.　　　　　　　　　　　　と木はいいました。
　　“Then you can sail away... 　　　　　「そしたら遠くまで航海できるし・・
　　and be happy.” 　　　　　　　　　　　幸せになれるよ」
　　And so the boy cut down her trunk 　　そんなわけで、その子は幹を切り倒し
　　and made a boat 　　　　　　　　　　　船を造って
　　and sailed away.　　　　　　　　　　　遠くへ航海しました。
　　And the tree was happy... 　　　　　　それをみて木は幸せでした。
　　but not really. 　　　　　　　　　　　だが実は心の奥ではそうではなかった。
　　An dafter a long time 　　　　　　　　それから長くたって、
　　the boy came back again.　　　　　　　またその子が戻ってきました。
　　“I am sorry, Boy,”said the tree,　　「すまんがねぇ」といいました。
　　“but I have nothing left 　　　　　　もう、差し上げるものは
　　to give you・・・ 　　　　　　　　　　なんにもないんだよ・・・
　　My apples are gone.” 　　　　　　　　林檎はなくなってしまった」
　　“My teeth are too weak for apples,” 「歯が弱くて林檎は食べられない」
　　said the boy. 　　　　　　　　　　　　とその子はいいました。

　　“My branches are gone,”　　　　　　「枝はなくなってしまった」
　　said the tree.　　　　　　　　　　　　と木はいいました。
　　“You cannot swing on them・・・”　　「枝に登ってゆすることもできない」
　　“I am too old to swing on branches,”「年老いて枝でゆすれない」
　　said the boy. 　　　　　　　　　　　　とその子はいいました。

　　“My trunk is gone,”said the tree.　　　「幹もない」と木はいいました。
　　“you cannot climb・・・”　 　　　　　　「あなたが登ることもできない」
　　“I am too tired to climb,”said the boy.「疲れて登れない」と応えました。
　　“I am sorry,”sighed the tree.　　　　　「すまんね」木は溜め息しました。
　　“I wish that I could 　　　　　 　　　　「何かあげるものが
　　give you something... 　　　　　　　　　　あるといいんだが・・・
　　but I have nothing left.　　　　　　　　　あげるものとて何もない。
　　I am just an old stump. 　　　　　　　　　私はほんの古い切り株です。
　　I am sorry....”　　　　　　　　　　　　　すみませんね・・・」

　　“I don't need very much now,” 　　　「今はもう少しもお金はいりません」
　　said the boy, 　　　　　　　　　　　　とその子はいいました。
　　“just a quiet place to sit and rest. 「ただ、腰かけて休む所だけあれば、
　　I am very tired.”　　　　　　　　　　私はほんとに疲れた」
　　“Well,”said the tree, 　　　　　　　「そうですか」と
　　straightening herself up　　　　　　　木は、できるだけ背を伸ばしながら
　　as much as she could, 　　　　　　　　いいました。
　　“well,an old stump is good 　　　　　「ところで古株こそ
　　for sitting and resting.　　　　　　　腰をおろして休むにはいいですよ。
　　Come,Boy,sit down.　　　　　　　　　　さあ、きて腰をかけなさい。
　　Sit down and rest.”　　　　　　　　　腰をかけて、休みなさい」
　　And the boy did.　　　　　　　　　　　その子は、そうしました。

　　And the tree was happy.　　　　　　　それで、木は幸せでした。
